Hire Azure Engineers in India: Salary, Cost & Hiring Steps

Hire Azure Engineers in India: Cost & Process
TL;DR
  • Cost: Azure engineers in India earn $5,500 to $6,600 a year at one to three years (₹5.2 to ₹6.3 lakh), $7,300 to $8,100 at three to six (₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh) and $10,700 to $13,900 at six to nine (₹10.2 to ₹13.2 lakh).
  • Azure costs more than AWS in India at every band: about 27 percent more at junior, 10 percent at mid-level and 23 percent at senior, on the same reported dataset.
  • Azure also has the deeper senior bench: roughly 107 of 516 reported salaries sit past six years, about 21 percent, against under 5 percent for AWS. The smaller platform has more experienced people in it.
  • Fully loaded cost: add roughly 6 percent to gross. Provident Fund is capped at ₹15,000 of monthly wages and Employees' State Insurance does not apply above ₹21,000 a month.
  • To start: post the role and every applicant is screened and ranked against your criteria automatically. Employment, payroll and compliance are handled once you pick someone.

$7,300 to $8,100 a year (₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh) is what an Azure engineer with three to six years costs in India, and the surprise is that it is more than the equivalent AWS hire at every level. We have built India teams for 300+ companies, and this is the one cloud assumption clients most often have backwards.

The figures here describe a full time employee on your payroll. Microsoft partners and managed service providers bill Azure work as a bundled monthly retainer covering licences, tooling and margin, which is why a provider quote and a salary are not comparable numbers. For a permanent hire, post the role and we will screen and rank every applicant against your criteria.

Be clear whether you need an engineer or an architect. An Azure engineer builds and runs what has been designed: landing zones, infrastructure code, identity, monitoring, cost control. A cloud architect decides what gets built and answers for the bill, and costs roughly twice as much at the same experience.

What does it cost to hire an Azure engineer in India?

Azure salaries in India run about $5,500 to $6,600 a year (₹5.2 to ₹6.3 lakh) at one to three years, $7,300 to $8,100 (₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh) at three to six, and $10,700 to $13,900 (₹10.2 to ₹13.2 lakh) at six to nine.

Junior1 to 3 years₹5.2 to ₹6.3 lakh$5,500 to $6,600~84
Mid-level3 to 6 years₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh$7,300 to $8,100~323
Senior6 to 9 years₹10.2 to ₹13.2 lakh$10,700 to $13,900~107

Set that against AWS on the same dataset and two assumptions break at once.

1 to 3 years₹5.2 to ₹6.3 lakh₹4.1 to ₹4.6 lakh~27%
3 to 6 years₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh~10%
6 to 9 years₹10.2 to ₹13.2 lakh₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh~23%

Azure is the more expensive hire at every stage, and the gap is widest at the ends. It also holds the deeper senior bench: about 21 percent of Azure salaries sit past six years against under 5 percent for AWS, even though the AWS sample is more than twice the size. The likely reason is where each platform lives in India. Azure sits inside banks, insurers, manufacturers and large enterprises running Microsoft estates, and those employers keep people for longer. AWS concentrates in startups and services firms, where people move on or change title. If you need someone who has operated a regulated environment for years, Azure is the better-supplied search despite the smaller pool. Compare against other technical roles in India before setting a band.

What is the fully loaded cost of an Azure engineer in India?

Roughly 6 percent above gross. Indian statutory contributions attach only to wages below fixed thresholds that every band here passes, so the rates below apply to a slice of the package rather than the whole of it.

India statutory employer contributions
ComponentRateApplies (Central or State)
Employees' Provident Fund (retirement savings, similar to a 401(k))12% employer, 12% employee, on wages up to ₹15,000 a monthCentral
Employees' State Insurance (state-run health cover for lower-paid staff)3.25% employer, 0.75% employee, only where wages are ₹21,000 a month or belowCentral
GratuityAccrues from year one, payable after five years of continuous serviceCentral
Professional taxUp to ₹2,500 a year, varies by stateState
Leave encashmentAccrues against unused leave, per policyState rules on leave

Worked example on a ₹7.3 lakh package, about $7,600. Provident Fund sits at ₹1,800 a month each side, because the ₹15,000 wage ceiling caps it below the actual salary. Employees' State Insurance does not apply, since ₹61,000 a month is above the ₹21,000 threshold. Gratuity accrues at about $183 a year, leave encashment $157 and health insurance $104. Total lands near $8,100.

Gross salary and CTC, the Indian total-cost-to-company figure including employer contributions, are not the same number.

How do you evaluate an Azure engineer in India?

Start with identity. Azure estates are held together by Entra ID and role assignments far more than by compute choices, and a candidate who is vague there will create a permissions mess you inherit. Certification content is abundant in India, so exam vocabulary tells you nothing.

How they structured subscriptions and groups: Ask how they separated environments and why. Strong answers describe management groups, subscription boundaries by workload or environment, and policy applied at the top rather than repeated. Someone who put everything in one subscription has run a small estate.

A role assignment they had to unpick: Ask about access that was too broad and how it surfaced. Experienced engineers describe inherited owner rights nobody could explain and the care involved in removing them on a live tenant. This is where Azure environments genuinely fail.

Landing zones, and what they skipped: Ask what they left out of the reference architecture and why. Nobody implements the whole thing, and the useful answer names a deliberate trade-off rather than reciting the framework.

The hybrid part: Ask what stayed on-premises and how it connected. Azure work in India is very often hybrid because the customer base is enterprise, and candidates who have only run cloud-native workloads will be surprised by the networking and identity synchronisation involved.

Skip the tier-1 college filter, and weigh certification lightly. Almost every serious candidate holds an associate credential, so it rarely separates a shortlist. Operational specifics do, the same pattern as other engineering roles in India.

Where do the best Azure engineers in India work?

Inside enterprise IT rather than startups. The depth sits in banks, insurers, manufacturers, healthcare organisations and the large Indian IT services firms that run Microsoft estates for global clients, across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the Delhi region. This is the same population that supplies SharePoint and Dynamics skills.

That concentration explains both the pay and the tenure. Regulated employers keep people longer, pay for certification, and produce engineers used to change control, audit and hybrid networking. It also means most candidates have worked to someone else's process, so ask how they behave without a change advisory board.

The trade-off against AWS is worth stating plainly: fewer candidates, more of them senior, and a higher price at every band. Global capability centers in India sets out how larger platform teams are structured, remote engineers working with US clients covers timezone overlap, and work culture in India is worth reading before your first incident review.

How long does it take to hire an Azure engineer in India?

Slower than AWS at junior level because the pool is smaller, and faster at senior level because the pool is deeper. India has no statutory employer notice period for most roles, so the date is set by the contract your candidate already signed, and enterprise employers write long clauses.

Hiring timeline for an Azure engineer in India

Post the role and publish the job postSame day
Applicants screened and rankedAutomatic, as they apply
Interviews and selectionYour pace, commonly 2 to 3 weeks
Offer and acceptanceA few days, longer if a counter-offer lands
Notice period at current employerSet by their contract, often 60 to 90 days
Onboarding to first working dayWithin days once notice is served

The commonly cited 30 day statutory notice period does not exist. Maharashtra's 1948 Act carried that rule and was repealed in December 2017, and its replacement prescribes none. What binds is the clause in your candidate's own agreement. Open the role early, and see how onboarding through an EOR in India runs once notice is served.

What is the best way to employ an Azure engineer in India?

For one to fifty hires, an Employer of Record is the fastest compliant route. You get a full time employee with statutory benefits and clean ownership of the infrastructure code they write, without registering an Indian company. Contractors start faster but carry misclassification exposure. Your own entity earns its keep at scale.

Identity access is the deciding argument here. An Azure engineer will hold directory and tenant-level permissions, which reach further than infrastructure alone: mailboxes, files and every application sitting on the same identity provider. Handing that to a contractor is a harder conversation with your auditors than the rate difference justifies. Misclassification is the other exposure, and India judges it on how the work is actually carried out rather than what the agreement calls it. Already have an entity? PEO services in India fits better.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire an Azure engineer in India?

About $5,500 to $6,600 a year (₹5.2 to ₹6.3 lakh) at one to three years, $7,300 to $8,100 (₹6.9 to ₹7.7 lakh) at three to six, and $10,700 to $13,900 (₹10.2 to ₹13.2 lakh) at six to nine. Statutory contributions add roughly 6 percent.

Which costs less to hire in India, Azure or AWS?

AWS, at every level. On the same reported dataset Azure costs about 27 percent more at one to three years, 10 percent more at three to six and 23 percent more at six to nine. Hire for the platform you actually run, but budget for the difference.

Why does the smaller Azure pool have more senior people?

Because of where the platform lives. Azure sits inside banks, insurers and large enterprises that retain staff longer, so about 21 percent of reported Azure salaries are past six years against under 5 percent for AWS. The AWS pool is larger but skews early-career.

What should I test in an Azure interview?

Identity and subscription structure before compute. Ask how they separated environments, how they applied policy, and about a role assignment that was too broad and had to be unpicked. Azure estates fail on permissions far more often than on architecture.

Can I hire an Azure engineer in India without setting up a company?

Yes. An Employer of Record employs the person in India for you, so you get a full time employee without registering an Indian entity. Hiring in India without an entity sets out the mechanics, including contracts, payroll and statutory filings.

How long is the notice period for cloud engineers in India?

No statute fixes one for most roles. It comes from the individual employment contract, and enterprise employers and services firms commonly write 60 to 90 day clauses. Ask for the clause before you agree a start date, since the figures repeated across hiring guides carry no legal weight.

Why hire Azure engineers in India through Wisemonk?

India is the whole of our business rather than one country on a list. 300+ global clients, 2,000+ EOR employees managed, $20M+ in payroll processed, 4.8/5 on G2. Recruiting and employing sit together, which matters when the pool is smaller and enterprise notice periods stretch the timeline.
