Hire AWS Engineers in India: Salary, Cost & Hiring Steps

Hire AWS Engineers in India: Cost & Process
TL;DR
  • Cost: AWS engineers in India earn $4,300 to $4,800 a year at one to three years (₹4.1 to ₹4.6 lakh), $6,600 to $7,400 at three to six (₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh) and $8,700 to $11,400 at six to nine (₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh).
  • This role costs less than half a cloud architect at the same experience: ₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh against ₹14 to ₹16 lakh at three to six years. The title, not the platform, is what you are paying for.
  • The senior pool is very thin: only about 55 of roughly 1,200 reported salaries sit past six years, under 5 percent. AWS in India is an early-career skill.
  • Fully loaded cost: add roughly 6 percent to gross. Provident Fund is capped at ₹15,000 of monthly wages and Employees' State Insurance does not apply above ₹21,000 a month.
  • To start: post the role and every applicant is screened and ranked against your criteria automatically. Employment, payroll and compliance are handled once you pick someone.

$6,600 to $7,400 a year (₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh) is what an AWS engineer with three to six years costs in India, which is less than half what a cloud architect commands at the same experience. We have built India teams for 300+ companies, and the gap between those two titles is the most misunderstood thing about cloud hiring here.

The figures here describe a full time employee on your payroll. Managed service providers bill cloud work as a monthly retainer that bundles licences, tooling and margin, which is why a provider quote and a salary are not comparable numbers. For a permanent hire, post the role and we will screen and rank every applicant against your criteria.

Decide which job you are filling before you write the brief. An AWS engineer builds and operates what has been designed: pipelines, infrastructure code, monitoring, cost cleanup. A cloud architect decides what gets built and answers for the bill, and costs ₹14 to ₹16 lakh at three to six years against ₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh here. Most teams asking for an architect need an engineer.

What does it cost to hire an AWS engineer in India?

AWS salaries in India run about $4,300 to $4,800 a year (₹4.1 to ₹4.6 lakh) at one to three years, $6,600 to $7,400 (₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh) at three to six, and $8,700 to $11,400 (₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh) at six to nine.

AWS engineer salary in India by experience level
LevelExperienceINR (LPA)USD/yearReported salaries
Junior1 to 3 years₹4.1 to ₹4.6 lakh$4,300 to $4,800~443
Mid-level3 to 6 years₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh$6,600 to $7,400~701
Senior6 to 9 years₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh$8,700 to $11,400~55

The last column tells the real story. About 1,200 reported salaries sit behind this role, and only 55 of them are past six years. That is under five percent, and it means AWS engineering in India is overwhelmingly an early and mid-career job: people either move into architecture, move into platform or DevOps titles, or move on. Two consequences for you. The mid-level band is deep and easy to fill at a low price. And the senior band is both scarce and unusually wide at ₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh, because a handful of salaries cannot describe a market. If you need someone who has operated a large AWS estate for years, budget above the published range. Compare against other technical roles in India before setting a band.

What is the fully loaded cost of an AWS engineer in India?

Roughly 6 percent above gross. Indian statutory contributions attach only to wages below fixed thresholds that every band here passes, so the rates below apply to a slice of the package rather than the whole of it.

India statutory employer contributions
ComponentRateApplies (Central or State)
Employees' Provident Fund (retirement savings, similar to a 401(k))12% employer, 12% employee, on wages up to ₹15,000 a monthCentral
Employees' State Insurance (state-run health cover for lower-paid staff)3.25% employer, 0.75% employee, only where wages are ₹21,000 a month or belowCentral
GratuityAccrues from year one, payable after five years of continuous serviceCentral
Professional taxUp to ₹2,500 a year, varies by stateState
Leave encashmentAccrues against unused leave, per policyState rules on leave

Worked example on a ₹6.6 lakh package, about $6,900. Provident Fund sits at ₹1,800 a month each side, because the ₹15,000 wage ceiling caps it below the actual salary. Employees' State Insurance does not apply, since ₹55,000 a month is above the ₹21,000 threshold. Gratuity accrues at about $166 a year, leave encashment $142 and health insurance $104. Total lands near $7,300.

Budget separately for certification renewals and a sandbox account. AWS credentials expire on a three-year cycle and engineers expect the exam funded, which is inexpensive against the salary but easy to forget in a first-hire budget.

Run your own numbers with the Employee Cost Calculator, see take home pay with the Salary Calculator and the Gratuity Calculator, or read what an India employee costs across roles. Gross salary and CTC, the Indian total-cost-to-company figure including employer contributions, are not the same number.

How do you evaluate an AWS engineer in India?

Ask what they have deleted. The Indian market has trained hard on AWS certification content, so service names and exam answers are abundant and tell you almost nothing. What separates people is whether they have operated an account that costs real money and carries real traffic.

Something they turned off: Ask what they removed from an environment and how they knew it was safe. Real answers involve tracing dependencies, checking access logs and staging the removal. Anyone who has only ever added resources has been building, not operating.

Infrastructure as code, and where it broke: Ask whether the environment was fully described in code and what drifted anyway. Experienced engineers describe manual console changes nobody recorded and how they reconciled them. Someone who says everything was always in code has not run a system with other people on it.

Permissions they got wrong: Ask about an access policy that was too broad and how they found out. Identity is where AWS estates actually fail, and candidates who have tightened permissions on a live system will describe the fear of breaking something. Those who quote least-privilege as a principle have read about it.

The alarm that mattered: Ask which alert has woken them and what they changed afterwards. Good answers end in the alert being deleted or rewritten, because most alerts are noise. This separates people who have carried a pager from people who have configured monitoring.

Skip the tier-1 college filter, and weigh certification lightly. Across our placements almost every serious candidate holds an associate-level credential, so it rarely separates a shortlist. Operational stories with specifics are what distinguish people, the same pattern seen across other engineering roles in India.

Where do the best AWS engineers in India work?

Spread widely, which makes this an easy role to source. The pool sits across IT services firms and managed service providers, product companies, global capability centres and the internal platform teams of banks and retailers, concentrated in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the Delhi region.

The distinction that matters is between engineers who ran one estate and engineers who ran many. Managed service provider candidates have breadth across dozens of client accounts and are fast at standard work, but often left before any of it aged. Product and capability centre candidates have narrower exposure and much better judgement about cost, reliability and what breaks at scale. For a first cloud hire who will own your environment, the second profile fits better.

Because the senior population is genuinely small, do not filter on years if the mid-level candidate has operated something substantial. Global capability centers in India sets out how larger platform teams are structured, remote engineers working with US clients covers timezone overlap, which matters for a role pulled into incidents, and work culture in India is worth reading before your first incident review.

How long does it take to hire an AWS engineer in India?

Fast at mid-level, slow at senior. India has no statutory employer notice period for most roles, so the date is set by the contract your candidate already signed.

Hiring timeline for an AWS engineer in India
StageTypical duration
Post the role and publish the job postSame day
Applicants screened and rankedAutomatic, as they apply
Interviews and selectionYour pace, commonly 1 to 2 weeks at mid-level
Offer and acceptanceA few days
Notice period at current employerSet by their contract, often 60 to 90 days
Onboarding to first working dayWithin days once notice is served

Ignore the 30 day rule quoted across hiring content; no statute imposes it. Maharashtra's 1948 Act carried that rule and was repealed in December 2017, and its replacement prescribes none. What binds is the clause in your candidate's own agreement. Open the role early, and see how onboarding through an EOR in India runs once notice is served.

What is the best way to employ an AWS engineer in India?

For one to fifty hires, an Employer of Record is the fastest compliant route. You get a full time employee with statutory benefits and clean ownership of the infrastructure code they write, without registering an Indian company. Contractors start faster but carry misclassification exposure. Your own entity earns its keep at scale.

Access decides this one rather than cost. An AWS engineer holds credentials to your production environment, your data stores and your billing account, and granting that to a contractor is a harder conversation with your security reviewers and your insurers than the small rate difference justifies. Misclassification is the other exposure, and India judges it on how the work is actually carried out rather than what the agreement calls it. Test yours with the Employee Misclassification Check, compare routes with the EOR vs Entity Calculator, and read EOR vs contractor vs direct hire or the full comparison of India hiring routes. Already have an entity? PEO services in India fits better.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire an AWS engineer in India?

About $4,300 to $4,800 a year (₹4.1 to ₹4.6 lakh) at one to three years, $6,600 to $7,400 (₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh) at three to six, and $8,700 to $11,400 (₹8.3 to ₹10.8 lakh) at six to nine. Statutory contributions add roughly 6 percent.

Should I hire an AWS engineer or a cloud architect?

An engineer, in most cases. An AWS engineer builds and operates what has been designed and costs ₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh at three to six years. A cloud architect decides what gets built and costs ₹14 to ₹16 lakh at the same experience. Teams usually need the first and ask for the second.

Why are there so few senior AWS engineers in India?

Because people leave the title rather than the work. Only about 55 of roughly 1,200 reported salaries sit past six years. Experienced practitioners move into architecture, platform engineering or site reliability titles, so seniority in this market shows up under a different job name.

Does AWS certification matter when hiring in India?

Less than the volume of it suggests. Almost every serious candidate holds an associate-level credential, so it rarely separates a shortlist. It confirms vocabulary. Operational specifics, especially about cost and permissions, are what actually distinguish people.

Can I hire an AWS engineer in India without setting up a company?

Yes. An Employer of Record employs the person in India for you, so you get a full time employee without registering an Indian entity. Hiring in India without an entity sets out the mechanics, including contracts, payroll and statutory filings.

How long is the notice period for cloud engineers in India?

No statute fixes one for most roles. It comes from the individual employment contract, and services firms commonly write 60 to 90 day clauses. Ask for the clause before you agree a start date, since the figures repeated across hiring guides carry no legal weight.

Why hire AWS engineers in India through Wisemonk?

India is the whole of our business rather than one country on a list. 300+ global clients, 2,000+ EOR employees managed, $20M+ in payroll processed, 4.8/5 on G2. Recruiting and employing sit together, which shortens the gap between choosing someone and having them working.
