- You do not need a GCC to start. Engineers can be employed in India through an Employer of Record while the entity decision stays open, which is how a UK robotics startup added nine engineers in five months with no subsidiary.
- More than 80 German firms run over 150 capability center units in India with 130,000+ professionals, reported by Zinnov in October 2025. That is the enterprise pattern, not the reference class for a 200-person software company.
- India is 4.5 hours ahead of Germany on CET and 3.5 hours ahead on CEST, because India runs no daylight saving. A 10:00 to 14:00 CET window is 14:30 to 18:30 IST, and 13:30 to 17:30 IST in summer.
- One senior engineer in India costs an estimated EUR 35,132.72 a year all in, EUR 33,005.13 gross plus a EUR 2,127.59 service fee, as of November 2026. It is an estimate from our employee cost calculator, not a quote.
- Settle the data questions before day one: which personal data the India team touches, what the contract says, and who has access. The transfer position itself is a question for your own counsel or DPO.

A German software company that wants to hire developers in India usually starts from a backlog, not from a cost model. The requisitions have been open for months, the roadmap has already moved twice, and somebody has started asking what the capability centers everyone else seems to have actually cost.
We employ engineers in India for software companies that already have an engineering organization. So this is written for that shape: existing owners, existing rituals, an existing codebase, and a delivery date somebody has committed to externally.
The short version of our answer is that you do not need a capability center to begin, and the companies that treat one as a prerequisite lose a year finding that out.
If you are building a first product team rather than adding to one, the sequencing is genuinely different, and that case is worked through in a European startup building a remote product engineering team in India.
Why are German software companies adding engineering capacity in India?
Because the binding constraint is hiring speed, not cost. Open engineering requisitions in Germany stay open for months, and the roadmap slips while they do. India gives a deep, English-speaking engineering market where a company can employ people in weeks through an Employer of Record, without setting up an Indian entity first.
What usually triggers it
The trigger is almost never a board slide about offshoring. In our experience it is one of four very specific situations:
- A requisition that will not close: the role has been open two quarters and the shortlist keeps producing the same three candidates at a salary nobody approved.
- A release date that has already moved: the team is not short on direction, it is short on hands, and adding a contractor for three months does not fix a twelve month problem.
- A platform nobody owns: something important is maintained in the gaps between two squads, and it shows.
- A specialism you need one of: data engineering, ML tooling, or an infrastructure skill your local market prices as a scarce good.
If the pattern is scaling an engineering function rather than starting one, the resources for scaling teams cover the organizational side of the same decision.
What the German GCC numbers do and do not tell a 200-person software company
The numbers are real and they are large. More than 80 German companies run over 150 global capability center units in India, employing more than 130,000 professionals, and capability centers run by Mittelstand firms grew 108% in five years, according to the October 2025 report on German capability centers in India {rel=nofollow}.
Read the names behind those numbers, though, and the pattern is industrial: Brose, Schaeffler, Knorr-Bremse and Webasto operating engineering and R&D centers at a scale that implies a legal entity, a site, and a country leadership team.
That is a different problem from yours. A 200-person software company adding five to thirty engineers does not need any of that infrastructure, and the route those groups took is the slowest one available to you.
The general mechanics of the smaller version, independent of country, are set out in building an offshore software engineering team in India.
Do you need a GCC or an Indian entity to hire engineers in India?
No. You can employ engineers in India through an Employer of Record, which becomes their legal employer while your company keeps the work, the tools and the technical direction. The entity decision stays open. A capability center is a later question about permanence and scale, not a prerequisite for hiring.
The clearest counter-example we can point to is a UK robotics startup's nine person India engineering team, built in five months with no Indian subsidiary, on compliant Indian employment contracts carrying benefits from the first payroll cycle, at salaries benchmarked to India's engineering market.
That company is British, not German. We have no German engineering case study to put in front of you, and we would rather say so than imply one. The employment mechanics are identical regardless of where the parent company sits.
Two other European builds worth naming, described by what they are rather than by numbers we have not published: a French media company's India team on the employment route.
And a French research firm moving contractors onto employment, which is the same decision arriving late rather than early.
When the GCC conversation becomes the right one
It becomes the right conversation when the India team stops being capacity and starts being a location: a permanent leadership layer, a hiring brand of its own, long-term property, and a headcount you expect to grow for years rather than quarters.
At that point the owned-build route makes sense, with your company holding the India entity from day one and employment through an EOR serving as the bridge that gets engineers working while the entity is being stood up. The operating-model questions are covered in global capability centers in India.
The practical sequence for standing one up, once that decision is genuinely made, sits in building a GCC in India.
How do you add India engineers to an engineering organization that already exists?
The hard part is not where the engineers sit. It is how they attach to squads that already have owners, rituals and a codebase. Decide first whether India engineers join existing squads or run a standalone squad with its own surface area, because that choice sets every review and on-call decision after it.
| Model | How it sits in your org | Best when | What it demands of your managers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineers embedded in existing squads | Each India engineer joins a squad that already has a tech lead and a backlog | The work is spread across several products and no single area can be handed over whole | Each existing lead owns one or two India engineers outright, including review time and growth |
| A standalone India squad with its own surface area | The India team owns a service, a product area or a platform end to end | There is a definable area nobody in Germany currently has time to own properly | One manager with real availability in the shared window, and a clean interface between the two teams |
Most of the builds we run start embedded and move to a standalone squad in the second year, once there is enough context in the team to hand over something whole. Going the other way is harder.
A functionally narrower version of the standalone model, where the India team owns the API surface, is described in European SaaS companies building API engineering teams in India.
Code ownership inside a codebase that already has owners
Ownership here is a contractual matter and an access matter, and the two have to agree. The employment contract assigns work product to your company and carries confidentiality terms; the repository permissions decide what the engineer can actually touch on the Monday they start.
Where this goes wrong is rarely dramatic. It is an engineer working on a personal laptop through a personal account for the first three weeks because the hardware did not arrive, and nobody writing down what happened to the code in the meantime.
Set the ownership boundary at the level of a module, a service or a product area, not at the level of a ticket queue. The engineers who stay are the ones who can point at something and say they own it.
Review, on-call, and who the India engineers report to
Reporting lines are the thing German engineering leaders most often leave implicit, and it costs them. Decide whether the India engineer reports to the squad lead in Germany or to a manager in India who reports onward, and say it out loud in week one.
On-call is the harder call. Adding India engineers to an existing rotation extends your coverage usefully, but only if they have the production access and the runbook to resolve an incident alone rather than waking somebody in Munich anyway.
A comparable build sequence, run from a different time zone with the same org-attachment problem, is covered in Singapore startups building remote engineering teams in India.
For the general shape of standing up any India function, work from build a team in India.
How do you plan an overlap window that moves twice a year?
India is 4.5 hours ahead of Germany in winter on CET and 3.5 hours ahead in summer on CEST, because India runs no daylight saving. Your shared window therefore moves by an hour twice a year, and anything booked at a fixed German local time quietly drifts in the India calendar.
| Season | Germany local | India local | What belongs in this window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter, CET | 10:00 to 14:00 | 14:30 to 18:30 IST | Standup, design review, pairing on anything ambiguous, incident handover |
| Summer, CEST | 10:00 to 14:00 | 13:30 to 17:30 IST | The same rituals, landing one hour earlier in the India working day |
Four shared hours is enough for a real engineering relationship, which is not true of every distribution. It is enough for one synchronous design conversation a day plus a handover, and that is the pair of rituals worth protecting.
What does not belong in the window: status reporting, anything that could be a written update, and code review that does not need a conversation. Spend synchronous time on ambiguity, because ambiguity is the only thing that genuinely costs a day when it waits.
What to re-schedule when the clocks change
Germany changes clocks and India does not, so your India team experiences the switch as your whole company moving an hour, not as their own day shifting. Treat it as a scheduled piece of work twice a year rather than as something people absorb.
Three things to check on the Monday after each change: recurring calendar invites that are pinned to a German local time, any automated deployment or release window that assumes an overlap, and the on-call handover slot. The summer window ends at 17:30 IST, which is comfortable; the winter one ends at 18:30 IST, which is late enough to matter to people with families.
If the distribution you are planning is wider than the German one, the mechanics of running a split engineering day are worked through in managing an engineering team across time zones.
What does a senior engineer in India cost a German employer?
A senior engineer in India costs a German employer an estimated EUR 35,132.72 a year in total, as of November 2026. That is EUR 33,005.13 in gross pay plus a EUR 2,127.59 service fee. The figure comes from our employee cost calculator, so treat it as an estimate rather than a quote.
| Line item | Amount (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | 33,005.13 |
| EOR service fee | 2,127.59 |
| Total employer cost | 35,132.72 |
Assumptions: an India gross salary of INR 3,500,000, basic set at 50% of gross, HRA at 25%, LTA at 10%, the new tax regime, professional tax assumed at INR 200 a month, which varies by state, and FX updated November 5, 2026. The total is gross pay plus the service fee; the calculator reports accrued provisions separately. This is an estimate and not a quote.
Run your own role mix through the calculator before you build a budget around this. One worked example tells you the order of magnitude for a senior hire; it does not tell you what a team of eight across three seniority levels comes to.
Invoicing and the fee band
The service fee is set by the employee's salary, not charged at a flat rate. As of November 2026 the bands are $99, $199 and $399 per employee per month, and a senior engineer on the salary above sits in the $199 band. The full set is on our published EOR pricing bands.
A few things that matter to a German finance team specifically. Invoicing is available in 15 currencies including EUR, so you are not forced to carry the India team in dollars. There is a 1% FX markup and no markup on the salaries themselves.
Setup, onboarding and offboarding are $0, as of November 2026. A deposit of two months' salary plus fee is held, which is the line most often missed in a first cash-flow model.

What should you settle about data access before the first India engineer starts?
Three questions, settled before day one: which personal data your India engineers will actually touch, what the employment and contracting paperwork says about handling it, and which systems each role can reach. The transfer position itself belongs with your own counsel or data protection officer, not with a hiring article.
The questions to put to your DPO or counsel
We are not going to tell you what your transfer position is. We can tell you which questions stall a build when nobody has answered them, because we watch it happen:
- What does the India team actually touch: production customer data, pseudonymized data, synthetic fixtures, or nothing beyond code and logs?
- Can the role be designed to touch less: most engineering work does not require production personal data, and scoping it out is cheaper than defending it.
- What has to be in the contract: which specific confidentiality, security and work-product terms your counsel wants in the Indian employment agreement.
- Who signs off on access: the named person on your side who approves each system grant, and what evidence they need to keep.
- What happens on exit: how access is revoked, how devices come back, and who confirms it was done.
Take that list to your DPO before you open the requisition, not after a candidate has accepted. It is a two week conversation if you start it early and a two month one if you start it late.
What employment through an EOR gives you
It gives you a named legal employer in India, which means the confidentiality, security and work-product terms sit in an enforceable Indian employment contract rather than in a freelance agreement nobody has reread since 2023.
It also makes device and access control practical. Engineers work on company-issued machines rather than personal laptops, with laptops shipped to India engineers before the start date, and system access granted per role rather than per person who asked.
None of that answers the transfer question. It does mean that when your counsel does answer it, the controls they want to see are already in place.
How do you hire enough engineers in India to clear a backlog?
The constraint is rarely the size of India's engineering market. It is screening throughput and start dates. Decide the scorecard before the role goes live, screen against it hard, and plan delivery from the date a candidate can actually start rather than the date they accept.
Running the pipeline
A pipeline that clears a backlog looks different from one that fills a single role. You are running several requisitions against a shared bar, which means the bar has to be written down.
- Write the scorecard first: the three or four things this engineer must be able to do alone, stated so two interviewers would score the same candidate the same way.
- Screen against it, not around it: AI screening is useful precisely because it applies the same scorecard to the fiftieth resume as to the first.
- Keep the loop short: two technical conversations and a decision. Every extra stage costs you candidates at the top of the market, not at the bottom.
- Run background verification in parallel: start it at offer, not after acceptance, so it is not sitting on the critical path.
- Pre-board during notice: hardware, accounts, reading, and a named buddy, all arranged before day one.
Where candidates actually come from, channel by channel, is covered in how to find developers in India.
The stage-by-stage mechanics of moving one of them from shortlist to payroll sit in the hiring workflow from shortlist to employee.
If the volume is high enough that somebody needs to own sourcing full time, the case for an in-house recruiter versus an external one is set out in hiring recruiters in India.
For teams that want the top of the funnel handled separately from the interviewing, hiring talent sourcers in India covers that split.
Planning around start dates
The employment paperwork is the fast part. The slow part is the notice period the candidate owes their current employer, and it is the variable you do not control.
There is no single number to plan against, and anyone quoting you one is guessing. Notice obligations vary by employer and by contract, so the only reliable source is the candidate in front of you. Ask each one at first conversation, not at offer.
What this means practically: build the delivery plan off expected start dates, stagger your offers so the whole cohort does not arrive in the same week, and use the gap for pre-boarding rather than treating it as dead time.
The first thirty days decide whether a hire becomes productive or becomes a question, and onboarding a new India hire walks through what to put in them.
How can Wisemonk help you expand your engineering team in India?
Wisemonk is an India-native Employer of Record (EOR) that helps global companies hire, pay, and manage talent in India without setting up a local entity. For an engineering organization that already exists, that means a compliant Indian employment contract ready within weeks of acceptance, without registering a company in India first, so the start date turns on the candidate's notice period rather than on your paperwork.
We support 300+ global clients and more than 2,000 employees across India, process $20M+ in annual payroll, and hold a 4.8/5 rating on G2. Pricing starts from $99 per employee per month as of November 2026.
Here is how we help:
- EOR Services in India: we employ your engineers on compliant Indian contracts, run their payroll and benefits, and source and ship their laptops and equipment before the start date.
- Recruitment in India: our recruiters run the search, or you run it yourself in Mira, our AI hiring assistant. On recruiter-led hires the success fee is 10%, 12.5% or 15% of first-year fixed pay by salary band, with no hire and no fee, invoiced on the joining date, as of November 2026.
- Managed HR and payroll in India: the India pay run and its filings executed for you, from $11 per employee per month as of November 2026.
- PEO services in India: for the point where you hold an Indian entity and want the run-state handled under your own registrations.
- Background verification in India: identity, employment, education, court and police checks run before the joining date.
- Company registration in India: custom quote, for the point where the India team becomes a permanent center and you own the entity from day one, with EOR employment as the bridge that keeps engineers working while it is set up.
From our experience adding India engineers to teams that already exist, the builds that land are the ones where the India engineers own a whole surface area rather than picking up tickets nobody else wanted.
I'm very Happy that I discovered Wisemonk. They have been a pure pleasure to work with, and their attention to detail is impressive. They helped us understand their pricing model, find top-qualified individuals, interview them, and then onboard them. I gave them criteria for the type of people we sought, and they delivered. The individuals they were able to find have been some of the best engineers I have ever worked with. I recommend Wisemonk to anyone who is in need of staffing assistance.

Frequently asked questions
What should an India engineer's employment contract cover before they touch the codebase?
At minimum, assignment of work product to your company, confidentiality terms, and security obligations that match the systems the role will reach. Agree the scope with your own counsel, then make sure repository and environment permissions are granted per role so the paperwork and the access actually match.
How do our India engineers get company laptops and repository access?
We source and ship company-issued laptops to the engineer's address before the start date, so nobody works from a personal machine. Repository, environment and tooling access is granted by your team per role, ideally approved and recorded before day one rather than during the first sprint.
Can we be invoiced in euros for an India engineering team?
Yes. Invoicing is available in 15 currencies including EUR, as of November 2026. There is a 1% FX markup and no markup on the salaries themselves, so the euro amount you pay tracks the India gross pay plus the service fee rather than a blended rate.
Can we run technical interviews inside German working hours?
Yes, comfortably. With India 4.5 hours ahead on CET and 3.5 hours ahead on CEST, a late-morning German slot lands in the India afternoon. Candidates employed elsewhere usually prefer that over an early slot, because it sits at the end of their own working day.
What happens if an engineer accepts the offer and then does not join?
It happens, most often when a counter-offer lands during notice. Reduce the risk by keeping contact through the notice period, pre-boarding early, and staggering offers across a cohort. Plan delivery off expected start dates rather than acceptance dates so one drop-out does not move the release.
How many engineers should a German software company add in India in the first six months?
Enough to own something whole, which usually means three to six rather than one. A single engineer has no peer review, no cover, and no path. Build to a group that can hold a service or a product area, then grow it once the context is in the team.
How does Wisemonk price an engineer on a senior salary?
The fee is banded by salary, not flat. As of November 2026 the bands are $99, $199 and $399 per employee per month, and a senior engineer typically sits in the $199 band. Setup, onboarding and offboarding are $0, with a 1% FX markup on currency conversion.
