Hire Recruiters in India: Salary, Cost and Hiring Guide

Hire Recruiters in India: Salary, Cost and Hiring Guide

TL;DR

A recruiter in India costs about $2,300 to $3,800 a year in the first year, $2,700 to $5,100 at one to three years, $3,800 to $8,200 at three to six, and $8,200 upward past eight.

Fully loaded, a ₹5.7 lakh salary costs about $6,370 a year, with employer provident fund at the ₹3,000 a month cap set when the wage ceiling rose on 17 September 2026.

At the bottom of the entry band, ₹2.2 lakh is ₹18,333 a month, below the ₹21,000 Employees' State Insurance ceiling. ESI genuinely applies there, adding roughly ₹7,150 a year that most cost models miss.

The band spread widens fast with experience, from about ₹1.4 lakh at entry to over ₹7 lakh past eight years, because recruiter pay tracks the roles they fill rather than the years they have served.

To start, post a recruiter role and review applicants as they are screened and ranked.

A recruiter in India costs about $3,800 to $8,200 a year at three to six years of experience. For a company hiring steadily, that is less than the agency fee on two or three senior placements, which is the comparison that usually decides this.

Two nearby options are worth separating out. If you need a function rather than a person, with sourcing, screening and coordination split across several seats, the guide to the offshore recruiting team in India covers how that divides. If you would rather buy the outcome than employ the people, recruitment process outsourcing is the other model. This page is about employing one recruiter full time.

If the role is already clear, you can post a recruiter role and start reviewing applicants while you work through the numbers below.

How much does it cost to hire a recruiter in India?

Between roughly $2,300 and $15,800 a year in gross salary depending on experience and on what the recruiter hires for, against about $60,000 or more for the same role in the United States.

Indicative recruiter salary in India by experience
ExperienceAnnual salary (USD)Annual salary (INR)
0 to 1 year$2,300 to $3,800₹2.2 to ₹3.6 lakh
1 to 3 years$2,700 to $5,100₹2.6 to ₹4.8 lakh
3 to 6 years$3,800 to $8,200₹3.6 to ₹7.8 lakh
8 years and above$8,200 to $15,800 and above₹7.8 to ₹15 lakh and above

Source: blended market ranges compiled from Indeed, AmbitionBox and other salary publishers as surfaced in October 2026, rather than a single publisher's dataset. Unlike most salary tables we publish, these carry no per-band sample counts, so treat them as indicative starting points rather than as a benchmark. USD converted at ₹95 to $1.

The spread is what to read here, not the midpoint. At entry the band is about ₹1.4 lakh wide. Past eight years it is more than ₹7 lakh wide. That widening is not noise, and it tells you something about how the role is priced.

Recruiter pay in India tracks what the recruiter hires for rather than how long they have been doing it. Someone filling entry level support roles and someone filling senior engineering roles can share a title, share five years of experience, and sit twice apart on salary. Decide which roles yours will own before you set a band, and the full cycle recruiting stages are a useful way to scope how much of the process the hire will actually run.

Model your own figure with the employee cost calculator once you have a band, and read how an Indian salary structure splits basic pay from allowances, because that split, not the headline number, drives the statutory contributions.

What does a recruiter in India cost you fully loaded?

About $6,370 a year on a ₹5.7 lakh salary, roughly 6 percent above gross. At the bottom of the entry band the arithmetic changes, and that is the part most cost models get wrong.

The entry band is the one place ESI actually applies

Employees' State Insurance covers workers earning up to ₹21,000 a month. Nearly every role a foreign company hires in India clears that line comfortably, so the scheme is usually a footnote. A recruiter at the bottom of the entry band does not clear it: ₹2.2 lakh a year is ₹18,333 a month, which is inside the ceiling. The 3.25 percent employer contribution applies, about ₹7,150 a year on that wage, and it is on top of everything in the table above. The mechanics of provident fund, ESI and gratuity set out how the three interact.

The cutoff falls at about ₹2.52 lakh a year, so anything from the middle of the entry band upward sits outside the scheme. Two practical consequences. The cost calculator will not model it, because its minimum input sits above the threshold, so add it by hand if you hire at the floor. And an ESI covered employee already has state medical cover, which changes what employee benefits and private health insurance need to cover on top.

One statutory note if you budgeted earlier in 2026. The provident fund wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on 17 September 2026, lifting the maximum employer contribution from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 a month. The ESI ceiling did not move. Keeping those two apart is the most common error we see in payroll compliance in India.

Want the all in number for your band?

Wisemonk quotes the fully loaded monthly cost of a recruiter in India up front, including the revised provident fund ceiling, ESI where it applies, gratuity and health cover, and employs them for you from $99 per employee per month with no local entity required.

What should you look for when screening recruiters in India?

Screen on the roles they filled, not the number they filled. A recruiter who closed forty support roles and a recruiter who closed eight backend engineers have done different jobs, and only one of them will cope with your hiring plan if your plan is engineers.

Four questions that get at it:

  • The hardest role they filled: ask what made it hard and where the candidates eventually came from. Naming the channel is the signal; saying the market was tight is not.
  • A candidate who declined after an offer: ask why, and what they changed afterwards. Recruiters who never lost an offer either have not closed many or are not telling you.
  • Pushing back on a hiring manager: ask about a brief they judged unfillable and what they did. A recruiter who only takes orders will spend six months on a role that was mispriced from the start.
  • Writing to a passive candidate: give them a real role and ask for the outreach message. This is the fastest read available, and it is the part of the job that is hardest to coach.

If candidates are not replying at all, the problem may sit upstream of the recruiter, which is the distinction drawn in talent attraction against talent acquisition. Confirm employment history before an offer, covered in background verification in India, and agree the overlap hours early, since a recruiter has to reach both your hiring managers and Indian candidates. The notes on working with offshore teams in India cover how teams usually settle that.

What does a recruiter in India actually own?

Everything between an approved role and a signed offer, and in most small companies a fair amount either side of that too. The scope question matters more than it looks, because the same job title covers a person who only schedules interviews and a person who runs the whole thing.

A full cycle recruiter in a team of your size typically owns:

  • Taking the brief: turning what a hiring manager says they want into a role that exists in the market at the salary you have approved. Half of all failed searches are lost here.
  • Sourcing and inbound: writing the job post, working the applicants, and reaching the people who did not apply.
  • Screening: the first conversation, where the recruiter is both assessing the candidate and selling the role, usually against two or three other offers in play.
  • Running the process: coordinating interviews across time zones, keeping candidates warm, and chasing feedback out of busy managers, which is most of the actual week.
  • Offer and close: benchmarking the number, delivering the offer, and staying in contact through a notice period that can run 90 days. Candidates in India are routinely counter-offered, so a closed offer is not a started employee.

Which systems to ask about

Ask what they used and how much of it they configured. A recruiter who has only worked inside a large company's applicant tracking system may never have built a pipeline from nothing, which is exactly what your first hire will have to do. Candidates from Indian staffing firms usually arrive with heavy sourcing tool experience and lighter structured-interview experience; candidates from product companies tend to arrive the other way round. Neither is better, but the gap is predictable and worth planning the first quarter around.

How do you measure a recruiter in India?

Not on hires per month, at least not in the first six months. A recruiter joining a company with no pipeline, no job posts and no interview process will produce almost nothing in quarter one and a great deal in quarter three, and a monthly hire target will have you firing them somewhere in the middle.

What to measure on a recruiting hire, and what each number hides
MeasureWhat it tells youWhat to watch for
Time to fillHow long a role sits openIncludes your managers' feedback delays, so a bad number is often not the recruiter's
Offer acceptance rateWhether the role is being sold and priced correctlyThe single most diagnostic number here; below about 70 percent, look at salary benchmarking before blaming the closing
Screen to onsite conversionWhether the recruiter's judgement matches the hiring manager'sA low rate early is normal and should correct by month three; if it does not, the brief was never agreed
Offer to start rateHow many accepted candidates actually turn upIndia specific and often ignored. Long notice periods and counter-offers mean this is never 100 percent
Retention of their hires at six monthsWhether the quality is realThe number that matters most and the slowest to arrive, so it belongs in a review rather than a dashboard

The offer to start rate deserves particular attention if you have not hired in India before. A candidate serving 60 or 90 days of notice has two months in which their current employer can counter and two other companies can make an offer. Teams that keep in regular contact through the notice period lose noticeably fewer people than teams that go quiet after the signature, and a recruiter who treats the job as finished at acceptance will cost you roughly one hire in five.

Does an in-house recruiter cost less than a recruitment agency in India?

Past roughly six to ten hires a year, yes. Below that, an agency usually wins. The reason is structural rather than about rates: an agency fee is a percentage of each placed salary, so it scales with hiring volume, while an employed recruiter is a fixed annual cost whatever you hire.

In-house recruiter against a recruitment agency in India
FactorIn-house recruiterRecruitment agency
Cost shapeFixed annual salaryA percentage of each placed salary
Cost at low volumePoor, the salary is paid either wayGood, you pay only on a placement
Cost at steady volumeGood, the cost stops risingPoor, every hire carries a fee
Knowledge of your businessCompounds over timeRebuilt on each engagement
Candidate experienceOne voice, consistentVaries by consultant
Speed to first hireSlower, you hire the recruiter firstFaster, the bench already exists

Most companies end up running both for a while, with an agency on the roles nobody in-house can reach. The comparison of agency against AI-native recruiting takes the argument further, and the overview of hiring solutions in India sets the two against the other routes.

How long does it take to hire a recruiter in India?

The search is quick, because the pool is one of the largest in the country. The notice period sets your start date: commonly 30 days in a smaller firm and 60 to 90 in a large consultancy, which is contractual rather than statutory. Notice period rules for remote employees in India sets out what can and cannot be shortened.

Typical timeline to a recruiter starting work in India
StageTypical time
Post the role and publish the job postSame day
Applicants screened and rankedAutomatic, as they apply
Outreach exercise and interviews3 to 5 days
Offer issued and accepted2 to 3 days
Notice period at current employer30 days from a smaller firm, 60 to 90 from a large consultancy
Onboarding and payroll setup24 to 48 hours

Ask about the notice period in the first conversation rather than at offer stage, because it is the one variable that can move your start date by two months. The onboarding process through an Employer of Record runs in parallel, and the employee onboarding checklist covers what to have ready on day one.

What is the best way to employ a recruiter in India?

Three models are open to a foreign company, and for a recruiter the deciding factor is usually how closely they represent you to candidates. The comparison between an Employer of Record and your own entity goes deeper than the table.

Employment models for a recruiter in India, compared
ModelWho employs the recruiterBest forMain risk
Employer of RecordThe EOR, on your instructionOne to twenty hires with no Indian entityA service fee on top of salary
Independent contractorNobody; they invoice you directlyA short hiring burst with a fixed end dateReclassification, and candidate data outside your control
Your own Indian entityYou, as the registered employerA stable team of roughly 15 to 25 people and upWeeks to register, then ongoing filings

The contractor route is weaker here than in most roles. A recruiter is the first person every candidate meets, so they are speaking as your company from day one, and a contractor is harder to hold to that standard. The contractor and employee distinction also carries legal weight, since someone working your hours in your systems can be reclassified whatever the invoice says. An Employer of Record is a legally recognised model in India with a published cost, and the employment contract sets out confidentiality over candidate data.

How can Wisemonk help you hire recruiters in India?

Wisemonk is an India native Employer of Record working with 300+ global clients, with 2,000+ employees on payroll, $20M+ processed in payroll and a 4.8/5 rating on G2, pricing from $99 per employee per month. For a recruiter that means the role is posted and applicants are screened and ranked as they apply, and once you choose someone they are employed, paid and onboarded in India without you registering a company.

If the model is still open, the overview of an Employer of Record in India explains what it covers, and the note on how an EOR handles recruitment in India sets out where the two halves of the job divide.

Recruiting hires rarely stay single either. When one seat becomes several, the guide to the offshore recruiting team in India covers how sourcing, screening and coordination divide, and if your hiring is entry level in volume, the campus recruitment process in India is a different channel worth knowing.

If the recruiter is spending more time finding people than progressing them, the next seat is usually a talent sourcer in India, who owns the top of the funnel while the recruiter keeps the rest of the full hiring cycle.

Post your recruiter role in India

Publish the role the same day and review applicants as they are screened and ranked. When you pick someone, Wisemonk employs, pays and onboards them in India in 24 to 48 hours, with no local entity required.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a recruiter in India cost per year?

Roughly $2,300 to $3,800 a year in the first year, rising to $3,800 to $8,200 at three to six years of experience. Fully loaded on a ₹5.7 lakh salary the figure is about $6,370 a year once provident fund, gratuity, leave encashment and private health cover are added, before any service fee. These are blended market ranges compiled from several salary publishers in October 2026 rather than one publisher's dataset with per-band sample counts, so treat them as indicative.

Does Employees' State Insurance apply to a recruiter in India?

It can, and this is the one role in this cluster where it genuinely does. The ESI wage ceiling is ₹21,000 a month. A recruiter at the bottom of the entry band, ₹2.2 lakh a year, earns ₹18,333 a month and falls under it, so the 3.25 percent employer contribution applies, roughly ₹7,150 a year. Above about ₹2.52 lakh a year the role clears the ceiling and ESI stops applying. The mechanics of provident fund, ESI and gratuity set out how the three interact. Note that the Wisemonk cost calculator does not model ESI, so add it by hand if you hire at the floor.

Why is the salary range for recruiters in India so wide?

Because recruiter pay tracks the roles filled rather than years served. Someone hiring entry level support staff and someone hiring senior engineers may have the same job title and the same five years of experience, and be paid twice apart. The band is about ₹1.4 lakh wide at entry and more than ₹7 lakh wide past eight years. Define the roles your recruiter will fill before you set a band.

Should I hire a recruiter or use a recruitment agency in India?

An agency charges a percentage of each placed salary, so the cost scales with how much you hire. An in-house recruiter is a fixed annual cost. The crossover usually arrives at somewhere between six and ten hires a year, below which an agency costs less and above which the employed recruiter pays for itself. Most companies run both for a while, with an agency on the roles nobody in-house can reach. The comparison of agency against AI-native recruiting takes the argument further.

What notice period do recruiters in India serve?

Usually 30 to 90 days, set by their current employment contract rather than by law. India has no national statute fixing a private sector notice period. Recruiters in smaller firms are commonly on 30 days, while those in large consultancies and staffing businesses tend to carry 60 to 90, so ask in the first conversation because it moves your start date more than anything else in the process. Onboarding and payroll setup through an Employer of Record then take 24 to 48 hours.

Do I need an Indian entity to hire a recruiter in India?

No. An Employer of Record employs the recruiter in India on your behalf, runs payroll, remits provident fund and deducts tax, while you direct the work. Registering your own entity takes weeks and carries ongoing filing obligations, so it usually only pays off past a stable team of roughly 15 to 25 people. The entity and EOR routes are compared in detail if you are near that threshold. Wisemonk prices this from $99 per employee per month.

What is the difference between a recruiter and a talent sourcer in India?

A talent sourcer finds and engages candidates who are not applying. A recruiter runs the process from that point: screening, interviewing, offer and close. Smaller teams combine both in one hire, and in almost every case the recruiter comes first, because candidates with nobody to screen and close them are a cost rather than a hire. Larger teams split the two once sourcing volume is enough to occupy somebody full time.
