- Cost: software architects in India earn $30,000 to $33,200 a year at six to nine years (₹28.5 to ₹31.5 lakh), $30,800 to $34,000 at nine to twelve (₹29.3 to ₹32.3 lakh) and $36,900 to $40,800 beyond twelve (₹35.1 to ₹38.8 lakh).
- The band is flat from six to twelve years: three more years of experience adds about three percent, so seniority alone is a poor reason to pay more and a poor thing to screen for.
- It costs more than a cloud architect at the same experience: roughly 40 percent more at six to nine years, which is worth checking before you write a title into a job posting.
- Fully loaded cost: add roughly 5 percent to gross. Provident Fund is capped at ₹15,000 of monthly wages and Employees' State Insurance does not apply above ₹21,000 a month.
- To start: post the role and every applicant is screened and ranked against your criteria automatically. Employment, payroll and compliance are handled once you pick someone.

$30,000 to $33,200 a year (₹28.5 to ₹31.5 lakh) is what a software architect with six to nine years costs in India, and that makes this the most expensive individual hire in our India role data. We have built India teams for 300+ companies, and it is also the role clients most often try to fill when they actually need something else.
The figures here describe a full time employee on your payroll. Consultancies sell architecture as a fixed-scope engagement and charge for the deliverable rather than the person, which is why a design document quote tells you nothing about a salary. For a permanent hire, post the role and we will screen and rank every applicant against your criteria.
Check that architecture is the shape of the problem before you write the brief. A software architect decides how systems are structured and how teams build against them across a whole product. If the work is really infrastructure, platform and spend, that is a cloud architect and costs about a third less at the same experience. If it is one senior person to build the hard parts, you are describing a lead engineer.
What does it cost to hire a software architect in India?
Software architect salaries in India run about $30,000 to $33,200 a year (₹28.5 to ₹31.5 lakh) at six to nine years, $30,800 to $34,000 (₹29.3 to ₹32.3 lakh) at nine to twelve, and $36,900 to $40,800 (₹35.1 to ₹38.8 lakh) beyond twelve. Published averages sit around ₹30 to ₹35 lakh.
| Level | Experience | INR (LPA) | USD/year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architect | 6 to 9 years | ₹28.5 to ₹31.5 lakh | $30,000 to $33,200 |
| Senior architect | 9 to 12 years | ₹29.3 to ₹32.3 lakh | $30,800 to $34,000 |
| Principal architect | 12+ years | ₹35.1 to ₹38.8 lakh | $36,900 to $40,800 |
Two features of that curve should change how you write the offer. The middle is flat: moving from six years to twelve adds about three percent, so paying for tenure buys almost nothing and screening on years of experience will not separate your shortlist. And unlike most senior technical roles in India, city is a real lever here. Bengaluru runs ₹35.9 to ₹39.7 lakh against Hyderabad at ₹32.2 to ₹35.6 lakh, an eleven percent gap, so a remote-first hire outside Bengaluru is a genuine saving. Compare against cloud architects, who cost about 40 percent less at equivalent seniority, and other technical roles in India before setting a band.

What is the fully loaded cost of a software architect in India?
Roughly 5 percent above gross, and the proportion keeps falling as salary rises. Indian statutory contributions attach only to wages below fixed thresholds, so at architect salaries they touch a very small part of the package.
| Component | Rate | Applies (Central or State) |
|---|---|---|
| Employees' Provident Fund (retirement savings, similar to a 401(k)) | 12% employer, 12% employee, on wages up to ₹15,000 a month | Central |
| Employees' State Insurance (state-run health cover for lower-paid staff) | 3.25% employer, 0.75% employee, only where wages are ₹21,000 a month or below | Central |
| Gratuity | Accrues from year one, payable after five years of continuous service | Central |
| Professional tax | Up to ₹2,500 a year, varies by state | State |
| Leave encashment | Accrues against unused leave, per policy | State rules on leave |
Worked example on a ₹30 lakh package, about $31,400. Provident Fund sits at ₹1,800 a month each side, identical to what you would pay on a ₹6 lakh salary, because the ₹15,000 wage ceiling is absolute. Employees' State Insurance does not apply. Gratuity accrues at about $754 a year, leave encashment $644 and health insurance $105. Total lands near $32,900 a year.
At this level income tax reshapes the negotiation. Take home pay on a ₹30 lakh package lands near 78 percent of gross under the new regime, so candidates talk in total cost-to-company rather than net, and an offer quoted the other way will read as lower than it is.
Run your own numbers with the Employee Cost Calculator, see take home pay with the Salary Calculator and the Gratuity Calculator, or read what an India employee costs across roles. Gross salary and CTC, the Indian total-cost-to-company figure including employer contributions, are not the same number.

How do you evaluate a software architect in India?
Ask what they were wrong about. Architecture candidates rehearse system design questions, and the Indian market has trained hard on exactly that format, so the whiteboard exercise separates almost nobody. What separates people is whether they have watched their own decisions age.
The design they would now reverse: Ask which architectural choice they regret and what it cost to live with. Real architects name one immediately, usually a premature split into services or a database chosen for the wrong reason. Anyone whose past decisions all still look correct has either moved jobs before the bill arrived or was never the one deciding.
Constraints they designed around: Ask about the last time budget, headcount or an existing system forced a worse design than they wanted. Architecture in practice is choosing which compromise to accept, and candidates who only describe ideal-state designs have been drawing diagrams rather than shipping.
How they get other teams to comply: Ask how they handled a team that ignored the standard. This is most of the job at scale. Strong answers describe making the right path easier rather than issuing rules, and they involve tooling, templates and review rather than authority.
Where they let things stay messy: Ask what they deliberately left badly designed. Experienced architects triage, because effort spent perfecting something stable is effort not spent on the part that keeps breaking. A candidate who wants to fix everything will rewrite systems that were paying their way.
Skip the tier-1 college filter, and be equally sceptical of the title itself. Across our placements a number of the strongest architecture hires carried a senior or lead engineer title rather than an architect one, because many Indian services firms award the title on tenure. The same pattern shows up across other engineering roles in India.
Where do the best software architects in India work?
The deepest pool sits inside product companies and global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the Delhi region, with a very large secondary pool across the Indian IT services firms. Those two groups produce noticeably different people.
Services firm architects have seen more systems, more industries and more client conversations, and they are practised at presenting a design to people who will not read it. What many have not done is operate a system for three years and absorb the consequences. Product and capability centre architects have the opposite profile: narrower exposure, and much better judgement about what actually fails once real traffic and real teams arrive.
For a first architecture hire who will own the shape of your system for years, the second group generally fits better, and the title on their CV is often not architect at all. Global capability centers in India sets out how the larger teams are structured, remote engineers working with US clients covers timezone overlap, and work culture in India is worth reading before your first design review, since disagreement is often expressed indirectly.
How long does it take to hire a software architect in India?
The search dominates, not the paperwork. India has no statutory employer notice period for most roles, so the date is set by the contract your candidate already signed, and senior technology contracts commonly run 90 days.
| Stage | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Post the role and publish the job post | Same day |
| Applicants screened and ranked | Automatic, as they apply |
| Interviews and selection | Your pace, commonly 3 to 5 weeks at this level |
| Offer and acceptance | A few days, longer if a counter-offer lands |
| Notice period at current employer | Set by their contract, often 90 days |
| Onboarding to first working day | Within days once notice is served |
The 30 day statutory notice period that hiring guides repeat does not exist. Maharashtra's 1948 Act carried that rule and was repealed in December 2017, and its replacement prescribes none. What binds is the clause in your candidate's own agreement. Open the role early, and see how onboarding through an EOR in India runs once notice is served.
What is the best way to employ a software architect in India?
For one to fifty hires, an Employer of Record is the fastest compliant route. You get a full time employee with statutory benefits and clean ownership of the designs and code they produce, without registering an Indian company. Contractors start faster but carry misclassification exposure. Your own entity earns its keep at scale.
| EOR | Contractor | Own entity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first hire | Days | Days | 3 to 6 months |
| Statutory benefits | Included | None | You administer |
| Misclassification risk | None, they are employed | High for ongoing full time work | None |
| IP assignment (who owns the work) | Employer owns by default | Depends on contract drafting | Employer owns by default |
| Best for | 1 to 50 hires, speed, testing the market | Genuinely project based work | 50+ hires, long term presence |
Permanence is the argument for this role specifically. An architect's output is a set of constraints your engineers will build against for years, and someone on a fixed engagement has every incentive to leave behind a design nobody else can extend. Employment also settles ownership of the design artefacts by default. Misclassification is the other exposure, and India judges it on how the work is actually carried out rather than what the agreement calls it. Test yours with the Employee Misclassification Check, compare routes with the EOR vs Entity Calculator, and read EOR vs contractor vs direct hire or the full comparison of India hiring routes. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a software architect in India?
About $30,000 to $33,200 a year (₹28.5 to ₹31.5 lakh) at six to nine years, $30,800 to $34,000 (₹29.3 to ₹32.3 lakh) at nine to twelve, and $36,900 to $40,800 (₹35.1 to ₹38.8 lakh) beyond twelve. Statutory contributions add roughly 5 percent.
Why is there no junior software architect band?
Because the role is defined by having lived with earlier decisions, so the reported data starts at six years. Anything advertised below that is a senior or lead engineering position using the architect title, which several Indian services firms award on tenure rather than scope.
Should I hire a software architect or a cloud architect?
It depends where the difficulty sits. A software architect decides how the application and its teams are structured. A cloud architect decides how infrastructure is built, secured and paid for, and costs roughly 40 percent less at the same experience. Large systems eventually need both, but rarely at the same time.
Does location change the cost in India?
More than for most senior roles. Bengaluru runs ₹35.9 to ₹39.7 lakh against Hyderabad at ₹32.2 to ₹35.6 lakh, an eleven percent difference. Hiring remote-first outside Bengaluru is one of the few genuine cost levers available on this role.
Can I hire a software architect in India without setting up a company?
Yes. An Employer of Record employs the person in India for you, so you get a full time employee without registering an Indian entity. Hiring in India without an entity sets out the mechanics, including contracts, payroll and statutory filings.
How long is the notice period for senior engineers in India?
No statute fixes one for most roles. It comes from the individual employment contract, and senior technology contracts in India commonly run 90 days. Ask for the clause before you agree a start date, since the figures repeated across hiring guides carry no legal weight.
Why hire software architects in India through Wisemonk?
