Hire Salesforce Data Cloud Developer in India: CRM or Data?

Hire Salesforce Data Cloud Developer in India: CRM or Data?
TL;DR
  • Salesforce publishes no Data Cloud Developer credential. The track is the Data 360 Consultant, exam code Data-Con-101, and it carries no prerequisite.
  • The exam guide lists DevOps among the expected candidate backgrounds alongside administration, business analysis and architecture, which puts this hire in the data engineering market.
  • Connecting data sources and harmonizing records make up 35 percent of the exam between them, so interview on data modeling and identity resolution rather than on Salesforce configuration.
  • No Architect-tier Data 360 credential exists, so a candidate cannot hold one and a job post asking for one will return nothing.

When you hire a Salesforce Data Cloud developer in India, the first decision is which labor market you are shopping in. It is not the Salesforce partner market.

Data Cloud redirects you toward data engineering experience, a role entirely outside the Salesforce ecosystem. Sales Cloud does the opposite, redirecting you toward administrator experience inside it.

So decide, before you post the role, whether you are bidding against data platform teams for the same people. That answer changes your shortlist and your offer.

Is a Salesforce Data Cloud developer a CRM hire or a data hire?

A data hire. Salesforce publishes no Data Cloud Developer credential, and the track is the Data 360 Consultant, exam code Data-Con-101, with no prerequisite. Its own exam guide lists the expected candidate backgrounds, and DevOps sits on that list beside administration, business analysis and architecture.

Where each cloud sits in Salesforce's credential structure is a separate question, and the four Salesforce certification families and which tier each cloud sits in answers it. For Data Cloud, the more useful signal is the background list.

The backgrounds Salesforce expects, quoted

The exam guide names the experience it expects a candidate to bring: "Salesforce administration, strategy, business analysis, (presales) solutioning, DevOps, technical marketing, or architecture."

DevOps sits in that sentence on equal footing with administration. Salesforce is describing someone who has worked with systems and data movement, not only someone who has configured a CRM screen.

Why that puts you in a different candidate market

Read that list as a sourcing instruction. The people who match it often sit in data platform, warehouse and integration teams, and their resumes lead with data work rather than with Salesforce tenure.

That changes who you compete with. Your rival offer comes from a company staffing a data platform, so both the interview and the compensation benchmark need to move toward that market.

It also changes how you word the posting. A requirement written as "five years administering Salesforce" filters out the strongest applicants, while "customer data modeling, matching and integration, Data Cloud exposure" brings them in.

What does the Data 360 Consultant credential actually test?

Getting data in and reconciling it. Data source connection and ingestion is 18 percent of the Data-Con-101 exam and harmonization and unification another 17, so 35 percent turns on the work of joining records. Interview on how a candidate models and connects customer data, not on configuration.

What Salesforce publishes about Data-Con-101, set against the question each detail should change in your interview:

What the Data 360 Consultant exam covers, and what to interview for
Exam detailWhat Salesforce publishesWhat to ask a candidate
Exam codeData-Con-101Whether they sat Data-Con-101 or the older Data Cloud Consultant exam
PrerequisiteNoneWhether they came from a data background or a Salesforce one
Connecting and reconciling dataIngestion 18 percent plus harmonization and unification 17 percent, so 35 percent between themHow they would model and connect customer data across systems
Expected backgroundsSalesforce administration, strategy, business analysis, presales solutioning, DevOps, technical marketing, or architectureWhich of those they actually came from

Two of those rows carry most of the screening value.

The heaviest sections, and what to ask because of them

Thirty-five percent of the exam sits on getting data in and reconciling it, which makes this mostly a design job. So ask a candidate to walk you through a data model, the structure that says which records exist and how they relate to each other.

Then ask what they would do when two source systems disagree about the same customer. The answer tells you whether they think in records or in rules.

A third probe is worth the time: ask which fields they would refuse to bring into a unified profile, and why. Candidates who have shipped this have opinions about scope.

What "prerequisite: none" means for a career switcher

No prerequisite means a candidate can sit the exam without holding an Administrator or Platform credential first. The credential on its own therefore tells you nothing about how long they have worked inside Salesforce.

That is workable, and often preferable, provided you screen the data experience directly. Ask which of the listed backgrounds they came from and what they actually built there.

What does a Data Cloud hire do once they are inside your org?

They make separate customer records behave as one. Identity resolution, the process of matching records that describe the same person across systems, is the core of it, followed by making the unified data usable elsewhere. One practitioner quoted below calls this layer the foundation the newer Salesforce capabilities are built on.

Your org, meaning one company's Salesforce instance, usually holds only part of the customer picture. The rest sits in a warehouse, a product database, a support tool and a billing system.

How matching rules decide who is one customer

One person can appear four times across those systems, spelled four ways, with four different email addresses. The resolution rules decide those four rows describe one human being.

Getting the rules wrong is expensive in both directions. Merge too aggressively and two customers become one; merge too cautiously and the unified profile you paid for stays fragmented.

The commercial consequence lands fast, because every downstream team reads that profile. Support sees the wrong history, marketing sends the wrong offer, and finance reconciles the wrong account.

Why the Agentforce direction raises the stakes on this hire

Writing in Salesforce Ben's 2026 job trends piece, published January 23, 2026 and updated May 11, 2026, Vicki Moritz-Henry says "Data 360 is becoming increasingly critical as the foundational data layer powering these capabilities."

Treat that as direction rather than obligation. If agents sit anywhere on your roadmap, the person modeling your customer data now is deciding what those agents will be able to answer later.

Need a Data Cloud hire working your customer data?

Post the role and we will put screened India-based data candidates in front of you on an Indian employment contract.

Where do you find Data Cloud skills in India?

In data teams. The credential has no prerequisite and the exam expects data backgrounds, so a candidate who has built pipelines and models elsewhere can be credible here without long Salesforce tenure. Screen the data work first and the platform time second, and benchmark the offer against data roles.

Pipelines, the automated jobs that move data from one system into another, are the work these candidates have usually already done. The Salesforce surface sits on top of that skill rather than replacing it.

That also widens your pool in a useful direction, because you can consider people whose last two roles never touched a CRM at all.

What to ask about the data work

Keep the first half of the interview off the platform entirely. Ask how they modeled customers, how they handled duplicates, and how they proved to somebody else that a merge was correct.

Then ask for one case where their matching rules produced a wrong result and what they changed afterward. People who have run this in production answer that question quickly and specifically.

If this is your first hire in India rather than your fifth, hiring in India end to end sets out the sequence from offer letter to first payroll.

What to ask about the Salesforce time

The second half checks platform fluency: which Data Cloud features they have configured, what they connected it to, and where the mapping got difficult.

Depth beats duration here. One serious Data Cloud implementation behind a candidate is usually worth more than several years of adjacent Salesforce work with no data build in it.

How do you employ a Data Cloud hire in India?

Because this hire touches customer data across systems, the route matters for more than cost. Employment through an employer of record puts the person on an Indian employment contract with IP assignment, meaning ownership of the work, settled up front. A Contractor of Record covers a scoped build. Your own entity is the third route.

A scoped contractor engagement in India fits a defined migration with an end date, rather than an open-ended data role.

If the model itself is new to you, what an employer of record is explains the mechanics in a page.

A Data Cloud hire reads your customer records daily, so protecting intellectual property when you hire in India is worth reading before anyone signs.

Cost, speed and control differ across the routes available for employing someone in India, and which one fits usually follows how long the data work runs.

How does hiring a Salesforce Data Cloud developer through Wisemonk work?

Wisemonk is an India-native Employer of Record (EOR) that helps global companies hire, pay, and manage talent in India without setting up a local entity. For a Data Cloud build, that means a data engineer working your customer data on an Indian employment contract within weeks, without registering a company in India first.

We support 300+ global clients and more than 2,000 employees across India, process $20M+ in annual payroll, and hold a 4.8/5 rating on G2.

Here is how we help:

  • Background verification: confirms employment history and records before anyone is given access to your customer data.
  • TalentScout: sources and ranks India-based data candidates against your Data Cloud brief as they apply.
  • PEO: runs HR, benefits and equipment procurement for the hire where you already hold an Indian entity.
  • Managed payroll: handles the monthly pay run and statutory filings for your India-based data team.
  • Freelancer and vendor payments: pays a contract data engineer or an implementation partner mid-build without a local bank account.

From our experience hiring data people in India, the offers that close are the ones benchmarked against data engineering roles rather than against Salesforce administrator roles.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Salesforce Data Cloud developer cost in India?

You are benchmarking against data engineering pay, not Salesforce administrator pay, and the two markets price differently. For bands, employer contributions and the total employer outlay, Salesforce pay data and the fully loaded cost of an India hire sets out the figures.

Can an Employer of Record hire a Data Cloud developer in India?

Yes. The EOR is the legal employer, so the person signs an Indian employment contract that assigns intellectual property to you and binds them to your data handling and confidentiality terms. EOR services in India covers contracts, payroll and statutory compliance.

Is Data Cloud the same as Data 360?

For the credential, yes. Salesforce renamed the certification from Data Cloud Consultant to Data 360 Consultant, and the exam code is Data-Con-101. Candidates certified before the rename may describe themselves either way, so accept both spellings on a resume.

Does a Data Cloud hire need Apex or Salesforce administration experience?

Not necessarily. The exam guide lists administration as one expected background among several, alongside DevOps, business analysis, presales solutioning, technical marketing and architecture. A candidate from a data or DevOps background can qualify without administration experience, so screen on data modeling instead.

Should I hire a Data Cloud consultant or a data architect?

The jobs differ in shape. A Data Cloud consultant works inside one vendor's platform and its resolution rules; an architect owns the wider data estate and the choices about where data lives. What a data architect in India does differently explains the split.

What is identity resolution?

It is the matching step that decides which records describe the same person. Customer details arrive from several systems with different spellings, emails and phone numbers, and the resolution rules judge which of those rows to combine into a single customer profile.

Is there a Data Cloud Architect certification?

No Architect-tier Data 360 credential exists to hold today. A third-party certification roadmap describes an Architect tier as planned, reported rather than announced by Salesforce, so screen on the Consultant credential plus evidence of real data architecture work.
