What is Leave Travel Allowance (LTA)?

Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) is a salary component in India that reimburses an employee for travel costs incurred during leave, and a portion can be exempt from income tax. The exemption covers domestic travel fare for the employee and their family, within defined limits and frequency. Like other allowances, the tax benefit is available under the old tax regime, which makes LTA a useful part of a well-structured salary.

What does the LTA exemption cover?

The LTA exemption is narrower than many employees expect. It is limited to specific travel costs and excludes the wider expenses of a trip.

  • Travel fare only: it covers the cost of travel by air, rail, or road, but not hotels, food, or local sightseeing.
  • Domestic travel: only travel within India qualifies; international travel is not exempt.
  • Family included: travel for the employee and immediate family, such as spouse, children, and dependent parents, can be covered.
  • Actual travel required: the employee must actually travel and keep proof; LTA is not exempt if simply paid out.

How often can LTA be claimed?

The exemption is restricted by frequency, not just amount. It works on a block-of-years basis set by the tax rules.

An employee can claim the LTA exemption for two journeys within a block of four calendar years defined by the government. If one or both claims are not used in a block, there is limited scope to carry a claim into the next block. Because the rules are specific, the current block and carry-forward position should always be checked.
