Frequently asked questions

Should you hire for framework expertise (React, Vue, Next.js) or JavaScript fundamentals?

Fundamentals first, almost every time. A developer with strong vanilla JavaScript, closures, async patterns, and the event loop in muscle memory can pick up a new framework in two to four weeks. The reverse is brutal: a "React developer" who can't explain how useState actually works under the hood, or what hydration means, will hit a ceiling the moment a debugging problem leaves the framework's happy path. Screen for fundamentals in the technical round, and treat framework familiarity as a nice-to-have that just shortens onboarding.

How do you evaluate whether a JavaScript developer keeps up with the ecosystem without being a hype-chaser?

Genuinely tricky, because the JavaScript ecosystem moves faster than any other major language community, and there are two failure modes on opposite sides. The first is the developer who learned React in 2018 and stopped paying attention; they'll write class components in a hooks-first codebase, or reach for Redux when Zustand or React Query would do. The second, and more dangerous one, is the hype-chaser who wants to rewrite your stable Express API in Bun and Hono because they read a tweet last week. The diagnostic question worth running in the interview: "Tell me about a tool or pattern you adopted recently, and one you deliberately chose not to adopt." A good answer shows both directions: curiosity tempered by judgment about cost of change, team familiarity, and ecosystem maturity.

Are open source contributions a reliable hiring signal for JavaScript developers?

Useful but easily misread. A few thoughtful PRs to a well-known library tell you the developer can read someone else's code, follow contribution guidelines, and engage with maintainer feedback. But raw GitHub activity is noisy: green squares can mean fork-and-rename projects, weekend tutorials, or AI-generated repos. The strongest signal isn't volume, it's depth on a single meaningful contribution. Ask a candidate to walk through one PR they're proud of and listen for tradeoffs, review back-and-forth, and what they'd do differently.

Why do so many "full-stack JavaScript" resumes in India turn out to be frontend-heavy?

Because the Indian training pipeline produces frontend skills much faster than backend ones. Bootcamps, YouTube tutorials, and college projects almost universally start with React, and "full-stack" often gets added to a resume after a single MERN tutorial where the candidate touched an Express endpoint once. The practical filter: in screening, ask specifically about database indexing decisions, error handling in async Node code, or how they'd structure a job queue. Genuine full-stack developers answer concretely.

How does the Bangalore vs. remote-anywhere tradeoff actually play out for JavaScript hires?

Bangalore gives you the deepest talent pool and the worst retention; remote-anywhere gives you better loyalty and longer search times. Bangalore-based JavaScript developers get recruiter pings weekly, and counter-offers are routine. Hiring from Tier-2 cities (Jaipur, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh) on a remote contract often yields developers who stay 2 to 3 years instead of 14 months, because the local market alternatives are thinner. The tradeoff: senior talent density is lower outside the metros, so for principal-level roles you usually still need to recruit in Bangalore, Hyderabad, or Pune.

Are Indian JavaScript developers comfortable with US or European working hours?

Most are open to partial overlap, fewer are open to full graveyard shifts long-term. A common arrangement is 2 to 4 hours of overlap with PST or EST, which means an Indian developer working roughly 2pm to 11pm IST. Full US-hours roles (working 7pm to 4am IST) attract candidates initially but see high attrition after 12 to 18 months as the health and social cost compounds. European hours (1pm to 10pm IST) are the easiest sell and rarely cause retention issues.
