Frequently asked questions

Should you hire a data analyst or a data scientist for your first data hire?

Almost always a data analyst, unless you have a specific machine learning product need. Early-stage companies usually don't have the data volume, infrastructure, or labeled datasets to make a data scientist productive, and you'll watch a talented PhD spend six months building dashboards they're overqualified for. A strong analyst with SQL fluency, a visualization tool like Looker or Tableau, and business judgment will answer 90 percent of the questions leadership actually has. Hire the scientist later, once the analyst has surfaced problems that genuinely need modeling.

How important is statistical knowledge for a business-focused data analyst role?

Less than job descriptions imply, more than candidates often have. Most business analyst work is descriptive: what happened, where, and to whom. Heavy inferential statistics rarely come up.

How does the Tier-1 vs. Tier-2 city tradeoff play out for analyst hires specifically?

Different from engineering hires, because analyst talent in Tier-2 cities is genuinely competitive. Cities like Indore, Jaipur, Coimbatore, and Ahmedabad have strong analytics talent coming out of regional engineering and business schools, and many have worked at Tier-1 captives before moving home. The retention math favors Tier-2: an analyst earning 18 lakhs in Indore has weaker outside options than one in Bangalore, so attrition runs lower. The tradeoff is at the senior end, where principal analyst and analytics manager roles still cluster in Bangalore, Gurgaon, and Hyderabad because that's where the complex problems and the FAANG India captives are.

Are Indian data analysts comfortable working directly with US or European business stakeholders?

The strong ones are, but it's a real filter. Analytics is a fundamentally communication-heavy role: an analyst who can run a flawless query but freezes on a stakeholder call delivers half the value. Indian analysts from product-led companies (Razorpay, Swiggy, Zomato, CRED) or from US captives (Walmart Labs, Goldman, Wells Fargo) usually have strong stakeholder muscles. Analysts from service companies (TCS, Infosys, Accenture) often have technical depth but less experience pushing back on a stakeholder.
