**A digital nomad visa is a residence permit that lets a person live in a country while working remotely for an employer or clients based elsewhere.** It is designed for location-independent workers whose income comes from outside the host country. Unlike a tourist visa, it allows a longer stay; unlike a work visa, it does not permit taking a job with a local employer.

A digital nomad visa grants the right to reside and work remotely for a defined period, on the condition that the holder's income originates abroad. The specifics vary widely by country.

- **Remote work only:** the holder works for a foreign employer or foreign clients, not a local company.
- **Fixed duration:** typically granted for a year or more, often with the option to renew.
- **Income threshold:** most programs require proof of a minimum income to ensure the holder can support themselves.
- **Tax conditions:** some countries offer tax incentives, while others tax nomads once they cross a residency threshold.

## What are the typical requirements?

Although every program differs, most digital nomad visas ask for a similar set of evidence aimed at proving the applicant can work remotely and support themselves.

1. **Proof of remote income:** employment contracts, client agreements, or business records showing foreign income.
2. **Minimum income evidence:** bank statements or pay records meeting the country's threshold.
3. **Health insurance:** valid coverage for the duration of the stay.
4. **A valid passport and documents:** passport, application form, fee, and sometimes a clean criminal record.
