**A business visa is a temporary travel authorization that lets a person enter a country for short-term business activities without taking up local employment.** It covers activities such as meetings, conferences, negotiations, and site visits, while the traveler remains employed and paid by their company in their home country. A business visa does not permit working for a local employer or earning a local salary.

## What can you do on a business visa, and what can't you?

The defining line for a business visa is between short-term business activity and actual employment. Crossing that line, even briefly, can breach immigration rules and create tax and legal exposure for the company.

- **Allowed:** attending meetings, conferences, and trade shows, negotiating contracts, and visiting clients or sites.
- **Allowed:** training, market research, and short-term exploratory or advisory visits.
- **Not allowed:** taking up local employment or being paid by a local company.
- **Not allowed:** delivering hands-on productive work that should be done under a work permit.

Rules differ by country, and the boundary between permitted business activity and prohibited work is not always obvious. Anything that looks like filling a local role usually requires a work visa instead.

## How is a business visa different from other visas?

A business visa is one of several entry routes, and choosing the wrong one is a common and costly mistake. The right visa depends on what the person will actually do and how long they will stay.

| Visa type | Purpose | Local employment allowed? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Business visa | Short-term business activities | No |
| Work visa | Employment with a local entity | Yes |
| Digital nomad visa | Remote work for a foreign employer | No |
| Tourist visa | Leisure travel | No |

## What documents and steps does a business visa usually require?

Requirements vary by destination, but most business visa applications follow a similar pattern and ask for similar supporting documents.

1. **A valid passport:** usually with several months of validity beyond the planned stay and blank pages.
2. **An invitation letter:** from the host company or organizer, stating the purpose and duration of the visit.
3. **Proof of employment and funds:** a letter from the home employer and evidence the trip can be financed.
4. **Travel details:** itinerary, accommodation, and return travel plans.
5. **Application and biometrics:** the completed form, fee, and any required appointment at a consulate or visa center.

## Why does the business visa boundary matter for employers?

Companies often rely on business visas to move people quickly across borders, but using one to do real work is a frequent compliance failure with serious consequences.

- **Immigration risk:** working on a business visa can lead to denied entry, deportation, and future bans.
- **Tax and permanent establishment:** extended or work-like activity abroad can create tax liabilities or a taxable presence for the company.
- **The real fix for ongoing work:** if someone needs to work in a country long term, the compliant route is local employment, through an entity or an employer of record, not a business visa.
